How to register for packaging EPR in Canada and the US: a producer checklist

There is no single Canada/US application. Canada is provincial, and the US is state and PRO based, so a producer registers separately in each place it is obligated.

This is general information, not advice about your company. Programs change their rules, rates, and deadlines, so confirm with the program or your PRO before acting. NorthEPR does not give legal, tax, or accounting advice.

What to have ready

  • A brand list covering the products you sell.
  • Sales by jurisdiction, so you know where you may be obligated.
  • Packaging weights by material for each product.
  • For US CAA registration: primary contact and authorized representative details.

What registration does and does not do

Registration identifies you to the program and starts the agreement step. It does not by itself complete reporting, and fees are paid separately as reports are filed. The details vary by program, so confirm yours with the PRO or regulator.

If you are registering late

Register now rather than waiting for the next cycle. Complete the account registration and agreement steps, report outstanding supply data, and confirm any late-report steps and deadlines directly with the PRO or regulator, since late rules vary by program.
